How 'Detroit' Changed The Trajectory Of Big Sean's Career

What's Really DopeMarcus FlowersComment

Three years ago today, Detroit, Michigan native Sean "Big Sean" Anderson released his fourth mixtape, Detroit, which changed the trajectory of his musical career.

The G.O.O.D. Music representer failed to live up to the lofty expectations set upon him on his first album, Finally Famous. Sean's debut project was a lot like his mixtapes, full of potential but he was not quite there yet. Many music critics felt that Kanye West crowned the young midwestern artist too soon.

But 2012 was the year of showing and proving and the FF general delivered. On G.O.O.D. Music's first compilation album Cruel Summer, Sean stood toe to toe with two Titans of the Hip-Hop world. On the track "Clique," featuring Jay-Z & Kanye West, Sean arguably had the best verse. The heir to the throne of G.O.O.D. Music also went hammer on the song "Mercy," alongside his fellow G.O.O.D. Music cohorts.

On Cruel Summer Sean proved that he was worthy to be heralded as one of the leaders of the new school, Detroit truly was his coming out party.

On the song "How it Feel" fans got a quick into the life of how Sean Anderson lives. With a beautiful visual from Sean's longtime video collaborator Mike Carson, the short musical sequence set the tone and raised anticipation for Sean's latest project. Big Sean said he was going to deliver he and that's exactly what he did.

Detroit  was a solid piece from start to finish. With solid features from his FF Crew Early Mac and Say It Ain't Tone. His fellow XXL Freshmen leaders J. Cole and Wale also provided great guest verses.

Detroit  was well put together from start to finish, but what really brought the project together was the was the stories from Hip-Hop legends. Snoop Dogg, Jeezy, and Common all provided amazing commentary about he time they spent in the city of Detroit. The stories were short, powerful, and very very relatable.

Before the release of Detroit  Big Sean was down and out. But after the project dropped, the young artist displayed a boldness that was not quite there before. He proved that he can stand on his own two feet without the aid of bigger musicians.

This was proven when he broke up with his longtime girlfriend, his new found aggressiveness on his features, his dating & breakup of Arianna Grande, and the crowning achievement of of of his musical career, Dark Sky Paradise.

Because of Detroit, Big Sean elevated himself into into the top tier of Rappers in the game today. And skies are truly the limit for him and he truly is Finally Famous.
