PNA Exclusive: One On One With @Doc_TheJedi

PNA caught up with Colorado artist Doc the Jedi. The revolutionary emcee is preparing to release his latest project, PulpFiction. We divulge a bit into his thought process, his future moves, and everything in between.

MF: You’re prepping for the release of your latest project PulpFiction alongside Truck Turner, how did you two decide to go about the project?  

Doc: Truck and I been rocking together for a minute so really he been involved in all of my projects in terms of influence.  PulpFiction is actually going to release as a separate mix and a mixtape. Overall they’ll be the same project in different formats, but the story is told in a different chronological order and there will be songs on the mix that aren’t on the tape and vice versa  

MF: You do a lot of production, are all songs on your projects produced by yourself?

Doc: Everything on The Prescription Vol.2 (Which never released online) and V.III was self-produced. About 90% of PulpFiction is self-produced the intro and outro are not, the intro is “DenverGetTheMoney” which is a rework of “Queens Get The Money” by Nas.

I am doing all of the engineering on PulpFiction which is something I haven’t been able to accomplish before and on that note, I have to give a huge shout out to DeColo working with him so closely on the last project taught me a lot.

MF: Along with production, it takes a lot out of an artist to produce their own songs and still rap on them. For example, Big K.R.I.T. created a lot of his beats on his earlier projects that he rapped on, he said he suffered from exhaustion after a while, are you afraid that you’re going to suffer from the same thing?

Doc: You know… I actually went through a close to 4 year period where I didn’t publicly release a project because I wasn’t making beats at a high enough level to satisfy my own artistic demands. I think exhaustion played into that a little and I didn’t want to work with any producers because I couldn’t completely control the sound. I’ve rapped over classic shit, Dilla shit all that and so it’s not that it isn’t an option I’ve just always had a point to prove that I’m not a product of anything or anybody but myself.

Nobody can evaluate my work and pass the credit onto anyone else. I got 3 kids so I can’t afford a lot of “help” anyway man hahahaha. There are producers I have projects in the works with for 2016, DurddyWurrk locally and out in the Midwest I got some stuff brewing with Maxx Marvel, and iLLeet. Hopefully that gives me some time to produce my next feature-length project at a high level without a pause in my catalog.

MF:  You’re a big advocate for political issues; especially problems affecting the African American community, will you be discussing any of those topics on PulpFiction?

Doc: Absolutely. When I write it’s not a controlled process it’s just a release and politics has always been something I’ve been involved in both my parents were union organizers growing up. Half of our family pictures together are out at protests so my music will always have some message of social justice associated with it. Not on every song my consciousness ebbs and flows like everybody else’s. I feel like I found a way to deliver something everybody will like, at least one song, while remaining true to myself and not compromising my art. It’s an intriguing combination of depressed enlightenment and blissful ignorance.

MF:  Any surprising features you can tell us about?

Doc: Ha I wish man, as of right now there are 2 confirmed features, DeColo being one of those. There are a lot of people I like collaborating with in the city, majority of them are on the last album and I didn’t.

 MF:  Great job on your video for the song “DenverGetTheMoney,” great visuals. Where did you shoot at and what was the inspiration behind the video?

Doc: I put the kids to sleep and shot that shit in the living room hahaha man listen… The riot footage is just stuff that had been sent to me from different protests throughout the last year livestreams I had saved etc. The entire video is an internal conflict presenting itself externally. There are four figures, myself, my higher self, my ego, and my anger.

Part of watching the video is figuring out which is what but I tie in the images of the protests because I believe the external reflects the internaland a lot of how we feel about ourselves is reflected in our view of society. I can go deeper into that but we’d be here all day.

MF: You’re a man of many talents, audio & video production, rapping, what other talents do you have up your sleeve?

Doc: A lot of people don’t know this, but I started playing the sax when I was around 10 years old and can read and compose sheet music. Technically that’s still a musical talent though so I don’t know if that counts. I played college lacrosse I wasn’t an all American or nothing like that though. I a carpenter too I don’t know if that’s a talent but I can build a house. Hahahaha

MF: This is kind of off topic, but I’m sure you’ve been up to date with the Trev Rich v. Kid Vegas situation, who do you think won?

Doc: Honestly, they both lost to me. I pay attention to details so a lot of the beef seemed staged. The two squads collaborate a lot and continue to do so, so I can’t really take it serous as a beef. Trev song definitely has more replay value and can serve as more than just a diss record for his catalogue but why did he even respond to that nigga? I think it was good opportunity for each side to generate the publicity of a beef without really having one or taking any risks associated with one.  The public loves drama especially when the people involved are accessible so a lot of people flocked to it, it makes sense. Trev shit got like 20k plays on Facebook though so not a bad strategy.

MF:  Any other big things we can expect from you in 2016?

Doc: More visuals. Now that I’ve figured out my software I really want to hit the ground running with that. Really I’m just trying to get myself out there, last year I just about doubled my twitter following (which still ain’t shit) and continued to expand my foreign fan base so I’m hoping to do more of the same at a much higher level. My main focus is performing this year. I recently moved to the Midwest and the local music scenes out here aren’t so entrenched in cronyism, you can actually get a good look for a show out here by auditioning well or by meshing with the style of the headliner.

It’s less about who you know and more about what you can do which isn’t always the case in Denver. That’s not a knock to anybody, I love Ru, 3Deep does its thang definitely, but the entire local culture out here and in a lot of the places I’ve been scouting is completely different. Like I can go down to a spot with my guitar play some shit and end up playing the venue that weekend without even sending an email. There’s live music everywhere out here everybody doesn’t just go downtown… people party in different neighborhoods and they all have multiple venues that support local and Indie music.  I still love Denver it’s my heart and I’m coming back soon, moving has just really opened my eyes to a lot.    

MF: One last thing before we let you go, Any sneakers you thinking about copping this year?

 Doc: Shit… I actually don’t support sneakers directly anymore, or a lot of manufacturing for that matter because of how they practice business internationally. I buy my shit second hand or from local spots out here that make support union made and American made shit. I know I still endorse the products by wearing them, vanity makes me conflicted haha but at least they’re not getting my money. I still got more shoes I bought in high school than I’ll ever really need. Levi’s too, luckily I haven’t needed a new pair of Levi’s but if I do I’ll probably just hit a consignment shop or thrift shop something. On that note though I’d buy from Vices or PNAand I need both pairs of the Asics Brick and Mortar pack from a few years ago so I might be on eBay at some point.
